Budapest’s First Real School Street will be in Józsefváros

This spring, for one month, residents, local communities, workers in the area, teachers, students and their parents, professional and civil organizations, and anyone interested in the topic were invited to share their opinions on the development of the Trefort school street.

Nearly 90% of respondents support the design of the Trefort school street. As a result, the Józsefváros Municipality has decided to implement the project in August 2025.

The Trefort school street is planned to open at the end of summer. We will use low-cost, easily movable elements, allowing for quick adjustments if needed. This will be followed by long-term planning for the transformation of Trefort Street and the neighboring Puskin and Szentkirályi Streets, in which the municipality intends to involve local residents.

Experiences from the school street’s design will be incorporated into the final designs through community planning sessions. The renewal of the three streets will depend on the Józsefváros Municipality’s budget. The project is coordinated by RÉV8.

The questionnaire was open between May 8 and June 9, 2025, and received 486 responses. 88% of respondents support the implementation of the Trefort school street.

Additionally, a community forum was held, where participants also expressed support for the project.

  • The majority (65%) of residents living on the affected street would like the implementation of the Trefort school street.
  • 88% of respondents support the establishment of the school street.
  • 80% of respondents from Józsefváros are residents of the Palace District.
  • 37% of respondents attend the ELTE Trefort Ágoston Practice High School, and an additional 19% are parents whose children attend the school — both groups overwhelmingly support the school street.
  • 85% of respondents walk through the street, 13% drive into it, and fewer than 10% park here on public space.

The majority of participants support implementing the plans exactly as they were shown. Over 130 suggestions were received. Some proposed closing the entire length of Trefort Street to car traffic, replacing asphalt with grass, or planting exotic greenery. We reviewed and categorized all suggestions, and those that are feasible within the current framework — which focuses on a tactical, simple, and fast implementation — will be incorporated. The detailed analysis and submitted proposals can be read here:

Green spaces and trees

Supporters welcomed the addition of green elements on the street. Many comments expressed a desire for even more greenery — not just here, but across the district. In this initial phase, we won’t be planting vegetation directly in the ground, but the long-term plans for Trefort, Puskin, and Szentkirályi Streets will aim to include in-ground planting beds and trees. For now, we are ensuring that the planter boxes contain a diverse mix of species, making the flowerbeds both visually attractive and beneficial for pollinators.

Public safety and cleanliness

Students suggested expanding the surveillance camera system, possibly with the presence of a security guard. Even among the 59 respondents who did not support the initiative, many voiced concerns about improper use of the street outside of school hours. We will coordinate with the public area supervisors to increase their presence on the new public space. Several people emphasized that the new furnishings should be easy to maintain, sustainable, and cleanable — while still being aesthetically pleasing.

Parking spaces

The pedestrian and cyclist-friendly zone will result in the removal of 11 parking spaces. 12% of respondents (59 people) who did not support the project, 22% of whom (13 people) specifically cited the already limited parking due to other nearby developments, and expressed concern that the school street would further reduce available spaces.

Due to the difficulties caused by the ongoing construction, the contractor of the Tranzit Ház being built at Puskin utca 4. is providing 25 parking spaces in the underground garage at Pollack Mihály Square for local residents holding a residential parking permit.

Additionally, the contractor of the Pázmány Campus is currently offering 5 parking spaces in the same location.

Furthermore, in cooperation with the Budapesti Közlekedési Központ and Budapest Közút, we are creating exclusive residential parking spaces in the surrounding streets.
