In August, Józsefváros will be home to Budapest’s first school street, located on the section of road in front of the ELTE Trefort Ágoston Grammar School.

As the first step, the entire street will receive new pavement, which will require a full closure of the street for two weeks. After that, a protected, car-free public space will be created in front of the school. In the future, the rest of Trefort utca will be accessible to vehicles only as a dead-end street from Puskin utca.

The road surface on Trefort utca is currently in poor condition, so starting August 11, 2025, the entire length of the street will be closed to traffic, and a new wearing course will be laid. The construction is expected to take two weeks, depending on the weather conditions.

Following the resurfacing, a car-free school street will be established in front of the school. The public space will be marked off with retractable bollards at the line between the sidewalk of Szentkirályi utca and the gate at 5 Trefort utca. After the paving is completed, the new traffic regulation will come into effect on August 25, 2025. This means that in the future, vehicles will no longer be able to enter Trefort utca from Szentkirályi utca, only from Puskin utca.  Street furniture and planters will be placed in front of the school, and the new public space will be highlighted with street art on the asphalt.

We kindly ask vehicle owners to remove their cars from Trefort utca by 8:00 a.m. on August 11, 2025, at the latest.

To support parking for local residents, 24-hour exclusive residential parking spaces without time limits will be designated in the surrounding streets. We ask those passing through the area by car to respect these spaces and not occupy spots reserved for local residents.

Of course, pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the construction period. In the future, Trefort School utca will operate as a pedestrian and cyclist zone.

Earlier this spring, residents and local communities had one month to share their opinions on the creation of the Trefort School utca.

Nearly 90% of all respondents, including 65% of those living on the nearby streets, support the creation of the Trefort school street. Based on this feedback, the Józsefváros Municipality decided to implement the Trefort School Street in August 2025.
