Construction of the new pedestrian crossing on Baross utca begins

Last updated: (Létrehozva: )

On 12 May, the Municipality of Józsefváros will start the construction of a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights on Baross utca, between Szűz utca and Leonardo da Vinci utca. The project aims to improve pedestrian safety, especially in a section where there is currently no designated crossing.

Why is it important to build a new crosswalk?

On the affected section of Baross utca, the nearest pedestrian crossings are located at Horváth Mihály tér and Szigony utca, which represent a detour of several hundred metres for pedestrians, so most people have to choose the crossing without traffic rules. The current investment is designed to solve this problem.

The investment is being carried out by the Municipality of Józsefváros on the territory of the Municipality of Budapest.

What will happen during implementation?

The works will include:

  • a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights,
  • new street lighting,
  • stormwater drainage improvements,
  • traffic management works (kerbing, asphalting, tactile signs),
  • and traffic engineering interventions.

How will the construction affect transportation?

Construction is divided into three main phases, but they overlap:

  • Phase 0: In this phase, the mobi point on the corner of Szűz utca will be demolished.

This is expected to take place between 12-16 May 2025.

  • Phase 1: At this phase, the work will be mainly on the Leonardo da Vinci utca side. Car traffic will be secured, but the construction of the pedestrian crossing will start, so a half-lane road closure will be in place.

This is expected to run from 12 May to the end of May 2025.

  • Phase  2: At this phase, work will be mainly on the side facing Szűz utca. Car traffic will be secured, but the construction of the other part of the pedestrian crossing and the associated stormwater drainage will also start, so a half-lane road closure will be in place.

This is expected to run from early June to the end of June 2025

This means there will be partial road closures on both sides, with temporary signs to help direct traffic. During the works, the designated cycle lane will be temporarily closed.

Stopping on both sides is prohibited.

The construction of the traffic light junction and the upgrading of the street lighting will be ongoing throughout the works – always in parallel with the worksite.

In addition, asphalting works will be carried out on both sides in the final stages of the works: first on the Leonardo da Vinci utca side and then on the Szűz utca side.

Construction is expected to last until the end of July.

What will this section of Baross utca look like once the crosswalk is in place?

The new crossing will also transform the section of Baross utca between Szűz utca and Vasas köz. A no-stopping zone will be introduced on both sides of this section. Parking on the odd-numbered side will be possible from 83 Baross utca. On the even side, parking will no longer be allowed.

The area of the current mobility point will be modified and will have 3 bicycle racks. However, a new mobility point will be built on the other side of the zebra, where 10 scooters and 5 bicycles will be allowed.

How much does the pedestrian crossing cost?

The total gross cost of the investment is nearly HUF 46 million. The works consist of the following main elements:

Road works: HUF 11.5 million gross, this includes::

  • demolition and excavation works (e.g. demolition of existing surfacing, pavement, kerbing),
  • construction of new asphalt pavement, replacement of wearing course, installation of tactile signs,
  • edging and markings,
  • traffic engineering interventions (signs, pavement markings, relocation of mobile points),
  • construction of water drainage, levelling of utility installations.

Regulatory engineering works, i.e. construction and operational tests of the traffic light junction: gross HUF 24 million

Construction of street lighting: HUF 6,6 million gross

Stormwater drainage improvements: HUF 4 million gross

We thank residents and road users for their patience and cooperation!
