The Municipality of Józsefváros aims to ensure a healthier and safer environment for all, and provide safer and healthier living conditions for residents and school attendance for students.
According to our plans, the first school street will be established on Trefort utca. By completing the questionnaire, you can learn more about the details of the school street project and share your opinion about the design by submitting your answers. In April, the Józsefváros Municipal Council adopted the Józsefváros School Street Program.
The goal of this program is to allow students to arrive at educational institutions under safer conditions, to create a healthier environment around schools, and to establish community spaces that children, young people, and local residents can freely use. See the detailed program here.
What is a School Street?
We all know the feeling of worry when letting our child go to school. School streets offer a solution to this very real concern by creating a safe urban space where there is no risk of a child stepping onto the roadway due to a car parked on the sidewalk, or a driver dropping off another student accidentally causing danger while parking.
Why Is a School Street Beneficial?
- We are creating space for the local community. Students of the gymnasium and local residents can freely use the urban space in front of the institution.
- The air will be cleaner. Since cars can only stop farther away from the entrance, air pollution in front of the school is reduced.
- Parking spaces have been designated further away from the entrance, eliminating dangerous maneuvering near schools.
- We encourage children to walk or cycle to school. Daily physical activity is crucial for a healthy lifestyle. It has been shown that regular cycling and walking can reduce adult mortality rates by 10%.
Trefort Street has all the necessary features to host Budapest’s first genuine school street in front of the ELTE Trefort Ágoston High School. On behalf of the Municipality of Józsefváros, the staff of RÉV8 Zrt. in collaboration with the gymnasium and based on the feedback of locals, will prepare the plans for the school street.
By furnishing the public area in front of the school with simple equipment and keeping cars away, the entrance area will become safer, air pollution will decrease, and students will have the opportunity to attend outdoor classes.
The establishment of the school street is the first step. In 2025, the municipality will begin planning the renovation of sections of Trefort utca and the adjacent parts of Szentkirályi and Puskin utca. These plans will be developed with the participation of local stakeholders through a community planning process, incorporating lessons learned from the school street project.
Completing the questionnaire is anonymous and takes about 5 minutes.
The deadline for submission is Sunday, June 9, 2025, at midnight.
If you would like to share your opinion in person or have questions about the plans, you are warmly invited to our project presentation event:
