The complete renovation of Korányi Sándor utca begins in November, thanks to a public-interest contribution from Ludovika-UPS

In November 2025, construction work for the renovation of Korányi Sándor utca starts, funded by a public-interest contribution from the Ludovika University of Public Service. The Józsefváros Municipality accepted this contribution at its Local Assembly meeting on October 30.

How will Korányi Sándor utca be renewed?

The project covers 8,040 m² of road surface and includes pavement replacement, sidewalk and curb renovation, new pedestrian crossings and bike lanes, landscaping with some green expansion, and public lighting upgrades. ZÁÉV Építőipari Zrt. will carry out the work.

How will the construction work proceed? What traffic changes will it entail?

The construction will progress in several phases. In 2025, work begins on repairing the sidewalks and curbs, followed by the roadway works in 2026. The timeline below depends on weather conditions and potential construction-related obstacles, so the completion date of each phase may change.

During the sidewalk and curb repairs, we will also replace several aging or unhealthy trees.

Detailed schedule:

Phase 1: expected from 24 November 2025 to the second half of January 2026

Work starts on the northern (even-numbered) side of Korányi Sándor utca, on the section between Üllői út and Illés utca. This phase focuses solely on repairing the sidewalk and curbs.

During this period, pedestrian traffic will follow designated routes, and stopping by car is prohibited on the affected section for the entire duration of the construction.

Phase 2: expected from 1 December 2025 to the second half of February 2026

From December 2025, sidewalk and curb repairs continue on the northern (even-numbered) side of Korányi Sándor utca, on the section between Illés utca and Diószegi Sámuel utca.

During this period, pedestrian traffic will follow designated routes, and stopping by car is prohibited on the affected section for the entire duration of the construction.

Phase 3: expected from mid-January 2026 to the first half of March 2026

In this phase, construction begins at the Korányi Sándor utca – Illés utca intersection. During this period, the following sections will turn into dead ends:

  • Korányi Sándor utca from Üllői út up to the Korányi Sándor utca – Illés utca intersection;
  • Korányi Sándor utca from Diószegi Sámuel utca up to the Korányi Sándor utca – Illés utca intersection;
  • Illés utca from Dugonics utca up to the Korányi Sándor utca – Illés utca intersection.

We will provide information about the exact start date of this phase in December 2025.

Phase 4: expected from the second half of January 2026 to the second half of February 2026

Once Phase 1 finishes, work continues on the southern (odd-numbered) side of Korányi Sándor utca, on the section between Üllői út and Illés utca. This phase focuses solely on repairing the sidewalk and curbs.

During this period, pedestrian traffic will follow designated routes, and stopping by car is prohibited on the affected section for the entire duration of the construction.

We will provide information about the exact start date of this phase in early January 2026.

Phase 5: expected from the first half of February 2026 to the first half of March 2026

Once Phase 2 finishes, sidewalk and curb repairs continue on the southern (odd-numbered) side of Korányi Sándor utca, on the section between Illés utca and Diószegi Sámuel utca.

During this period, pedestrian traffic will follow designated routes, and stopping by car is prohibited on the affected section for the entire duration of the construction.

We will provide information about the exact start date of this phase during January 2026.

When does the roadway renovation begin?

During the renovation of the sidewalks and curbs, car traffic can continue to use the roadway without restrictions. The only traffic change occurs during the construction of the intersection, when short sections of Korányi Sándor utca and Illés utca will temporarily turn into dead ends.

Roadway works start in February 2026 with milling, followed by local repairs, manhole levelling, and utility construction. After that, crews begin building the new pavement, installing pedestrian crossings, and upgrading public lighting.

We will publish information about traffic changes during the roadway construction in January 2026 on jozsefvaros.hu and on posters placed at the entrances of nearby residential buildings.

Parking during construction

The renovation of Korányi Sándor utca introduces several no-stopping zones, which reduces the number of available parking spaces in the area.

To support residents, the Józsefváros Municipality will designate new, residents-only parking spaces at the following locations:

  • Dugonics utca 2A–6 (between Kálvária utca and Illés utca)
  • Illés utca 14–40 (between Korányi Sándor utca and Kőris utca)

We expect to designate these new parking spaces during the week of November 17, 2025.

Do you live on Korányi Sándor utca and hold a district parking permit?

If yes, you qualify for a 100% discount for six months under the parking regulations, due to the construction works.

  • Who qualifies? Residents who hold a parking permit and live in a property whose façade directly borders the public area under renovation.
  • For how long? 6 months.
  • How much is the discount? 100% — the parking permit is free for six months.
  • How can you apply? JGK Zrt.’s Parking Directorate will notify eligible residents. After receiving the notification, residents must visit the customer service office of the Parking Directorate on Német utca to request the discount.

The investment funded by the public-interest contribution of the Ludovika University of Public Service amounts to approximately HUF 500 million gross. We apologize for any inconvenience during the construction and thank you for your understanding.

We thank the Ludovika University of Public Service for its contribution.
