The Józsefváros Municipality and RÉV8 would like to hear what local residents think about the southern side of the square – the area in front of Fazekas Mihály Grammar School, including the playground and the event square.

Horváth Mihály tér is one of the central squares of Józsefváros, divided by Baross utca into a northern side (by the church) and a southern side. The Józsefváros Municipality has commissioned RÉV8 to redesign the southern side of the square. The first step in this process is this questionnaire, through which we would like to learn:
- what you feel is missing from the square,
- which improvements you think would be most important,
- what would make you visit the square more often
Based on the results, a designer will prepare a concept plan, expected to be completed in spring 2026. The draft will be available online for public feedback, and the final design will be developed based on the comments received.
In the coming months, RÉV8 will also reach out to local businesses and institutions to include their ideas and needs in the planning process. In addition, on-site observations will be carried out to better understand how people currently use the square. The implementation of the project will depend on the municipality’s budget.
What is currently on the southern side?
The current layout of the event square was created in 2014, and the Micimackó Playground opened in 2015. The fenced park includes a play castle, swings, and spring and spinning toys. The event square features a fountain and a carillon, and during the winter months, an ice rink operates here.
What about the northern side?
Plans for the renewal of the northern side were completed in 2022. In the first phase, completed in 2023, the area in front of the St. Joseph Church and Kozmo Residences Budapest Hotel (formerly the Telephone Exchange building) was renovated.
There is currently no set date for the second phase.
What does the Playground Renewal Strategy say about the square?
In 2023, under the direction of RÉV8, the Playground Renewal Strategy was completed. It outlines the general development principles and provides recommendations for both basic and larger-scale playground improvements. Regarding Horváth Mihály tér, the strategy states: “The design of the playground does not reflect the unique built environment or the likely diverse user needs. Accessibility is also only partially resolved.” This was one of the reasons behind the municipality’s decision to prepare new plans for the southern side of Horváth Mihály tér.
