The enrollment period for Józsefváros Kindergartens, running from April 20 to 24, has begun! Plan your visit to our kindergartens or fill out the online application form, and in the meantime, we warmly recommend reading the message from the Kindergartens of Józsefváros to parents choosing a kindergarten regarding screen time in kindergarten!
“Dear Parents!
Recently, the question of how much time children spend in front of screens at kindergarten has been regularly raised in various parent groups and forums. We’d like to offer a little insight into how “screen time” fits into the daily routine at Józsefváros kindergartens.
These days, we obtain most of our information through digital devices. Is there a place for them in kindergarten? Very limited, and very deliberate.
They cannot replace play, physical activity, or hands-on learning, but they can play a supplementary role in enriching these experiences and help make learning more engaging.
Screen time should therefore never be used to keep children occupied—we are here to work with them and help them navigate communities more easily. If a smart device is used, it is for a maximum of a few minutes and is done with a well-thought-out educational purpose.
What do we use the television, laptop, and tablet for?
For example, for experiential learning: There are phenomena that are difficult to convey with words. We might watch a short film, for example, about the water cycle; how the Busójárás festival takes place or a rocket launch into space; how a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly; and we can even observe the lives of animals through a live camera feed.
In the Hans Hase (German) and English experiential education programs (both developed by experts based on the most modern learning methodologies—the former, for example, by the German government’s cultural institute), we make language learning playful with cheerful songs and videos featuring movement, in line with the professional recommendations of the program’s creators.
Rhythm Magic: The young musicians in our talent workshop use digital sheet music projected on the screen to harmonize, while creating music together accompanied by movement.
Minecraft sessions help us make computer use more child-friendly. In addition to playing and moving around, we develop spatial awareness, logical thinking, and creativity.
Some of our important rules: Screen time typically takes only 5–10 minutes as part of each session and does not occur every day.
We do not use screens for rest time; during rest time, the preschool teachers tell stories verbally.
Our teachers consciously select all digital content in advance, ensuring that it aligns with the specific needs of child development and serves a genuine educational purpose.
Our goal is to use digital tools wisely, in moderation, and in a guided manner, showing children that technology is a useful tool for exploring the world. Personal experiences, shared play, and real-world experiences are the most important things at this age! Thank you for your trust!”
