Selected forms of assistance that can be of relevance for non-Hungarian speakers:
Birth grant
A birth grant is available to a person who raises a newborn child in his/her own household and whose monthly income per consumption unit in the family does not exceed HUF 128,250. The amount of the allowance is HUF 15,000 per child.
The application form (including annexes) can be submitted in person, by post or electronically by the applicant or his/her authorised representative.
The application must be submitted within 6 months of the birth of the child with a declaration of income
Regular child protection benefit
A person who has a child in his/her family may apply for a regular child protection benefit if the child is a full-time student and is aged 23 or under (25 or under in the case of higher education) and the applicant’s monthly per capita income in his/her family is HUF 47,025 or 51,300 or less in the following cases
- single parent or guardian
- the child is permanently ill or seriously disabled
- an adult child
Content of the benefit:
- free or reduced-price institutional meals and holiday meals,
- cash allowance twice a year,
- other benefits provided by the law

Support for people with little or no means of subsistence (exceptional municipal assistance)
This form of municipal assistance is available to people whose subsistence is temporarily or permanently threatened and whose family’s monthly income per consumption unit does not exceed 128,250 HUF for a family of one or two persons or 114,000 HUF for a family of three or more persons. The allowance can be applied for 4 times in a year, with 1 month between applications.
The amount of the subsidy depends on the size and income of the family, but the annual limit is between HUF 50 and 75,000. A maximum of HUF 30,000 can be granted on one occasion, or HUF 40,000 per month if the application is for housing – with a transfer to the service provider – taking into account the annual limit.
The application form (with annexes) can be submitted in person, by post or electronically by the applicant or his/her authorised representative.
It may be granted four times a year, with a 1-month interval between applications, and may be submitted by means of a voucher, cash or a reduction in housing costs.
