Let us gather to commemorate the victims of the Roma genocide on the Roma Holocaust Memorial Day on August 2, 2021 at Teleki tér!
The Municipality of Józsefváros respectfully invites you to the district’s memorial flower planting ceremony in Teleki tér to commemorate the Roma Holocaust Memorial Day on August 2, 2021 Monday at 9 am.
On the Roma Holocaust (in Romani: Porajmos) Memorial Day, Roma victims are remembered worldwide who were tortured and destroyed in concentration camps during World War II.
The Roma were held captive in the ’Gypsy Camp’ at Auschwitz-Birkenau that the Nazi SS had attempted to liquidate on the 16th of May 1944, but the Roma captives resisted.
Since then, May 16 is marked as the Roma Resistance Day. Following the resistance, the SS soldiers eliminated the camp on the night of August 2 ro August 3, 1944, killing 3 to 4 thousand Roma people.
On Monday, August 2 at 9am at Teleki tér, we will plant red, blue and green flowers symbolizing the Roma flag as part of the memorial flower planting ceremony. During the planting ceremony, local musicians’ unplugged music will be played.
The planting ceremony will be followed by Rómeó Pápai and Krisztián Pászik’s slam poetry performance about the Roma Holocaust.
